Five questions to ask before choosing an engineering plastic
Start with the operating conditions, not just the polymer name.
A material family is the beginning of a specification. Start with these five questions.
1. What is the operating environment?
Record temperature, chemical exposure, moisture and cleaning requirements.
2. What does the component do?
Describe load, motion, friction, wear and required service life.
3. What dimensions must remain stable?
Define tolerances, conditioning and assembly constraints.
4. Which grade is being compared?
Filler, processing method and supplier grade can change properties.
5. What evidence is required?
Obtain the actual datasheet and documents for the intended application. This demonstration provides no certified performance data.
